The 100k Road Race is a unique discipline in the world of running. It requires rigorous mental strength and a strict race strategy. Little known to the general public, this race format nevertheless attracts a passionate and constantly progressing community. We'll introduce you to this extraordinary and very exclusive discipline!
100k Race: History of the Discipline
Before learning more about this particularly impressive race format, a look back at its relatively recent origins.
🧐 Where does the 100k race come from?
The ultramarathon, of which the 100k race is one of the flagship distances, originated in the early 20th century. But it was from the 1980s that the event became structured, notably thanks to official recognition by the IAU (International Association of Ultrarunners) and later by World Athletics.
However, it does not become an Olympic sport. That significantly limits its growth since the financial stakes and professionalization of the 100k runners are limited.
Currently, about fifty 100k races are labeled by the IAU out of the 400 existing races worldwide.
😶🌫️ An International Popularization with Mixed Results
The 100k race is experiencing strong development in Japan — with the famous Lake Saroma — as well as in Europe. Thus, France was long the country with the most races of this format, with 29 in 1991 and 14 in 2003.
Starting in 1987, World Championships have been organized annually, promoting the rise of a true international elite, particularly in Russia and Japan. But no miracle, however: the discipline remains among the most exclusive in athletics.
In terms of performances, the world records are currently held by:
Aleksandr Sorokin (Lithuania) in 6 hours 05 minutes and 41 seconds (2022)
Tomoe Abe (Japan) in 6 hours 33 minutes and 11 seconds (2000)

How to prepare for a 100k?
The 100k road format is particularly physically and mentally demanding. It requires a well-constructed plan and mental preparation work.
💡 The Technical Specifics of the 100k Race
The 100k road race is an event of pure endurance. Most often run on a 5 to 10 kilometer loop repeated many times, it requires particularly precise race management: hydration, nutrition, and pace must be skillfully orchestrated. Not to mention mental preparation! Imagine running a course of a few kilometers for hours: it can quickly become a challenge within the challenge if you haven't prepared for it.
Indeed, the effort can last between 6 hours for the best and 12 hours for amateurs. Concretely, it’s a distance that requires tailored training, which can in some aspects resemble a marathon training… with “a few” more kilometers on the clock!
Finally, if progression is king in running, it becomes the empress in the 100k. The road is a particularly demanding terrain for your feet, your joints, and more generally your body. Enduring the impacts generated by each step for hours cannot be improvised. Cramps, digestive issues… Your worst enemies lie in wait on the big day if you don't take the time to acclimate your body to this unique type of effort.
👉 The Key Workouts for a 100k Preparation
The base endurance: still crucial! With the mileage volume you will need to accumulate to be ready on the big day, easy runs are more than ever indispensable. Some will be particularly long, approaching the long run of a marathon training.
The 30' and 60' threshold workouts: we build a good resistance base. Depending on your level, the 100k is run at a pace more or less close to your base endurance pace. For elites and experienced runners on the distance, we approach a Tempo pace. Threshold workouts will help you work on your resistance, especially for the end of the race. They will help you build a good endurance base while working on your mental strength.
The long runs: prepare yourself to wear down the asphalt! To become a 100k runner, you must… set limits. A lot. It is spread throughout the week but the peak is placed on the long runs. Some plans include “shock weekends” to spread the mileage over two consecutive days. Elites even habitually structure an official marathon with a big warm-up easy run and a long recovery, nothing less. In the specific preparation phase, these runs will include segments at your target pace to familiarize yourself with it and tackle it with some existing fatigue in your legs. Of course, they will be an opportunity to test your fueling plan.
The specific pace workouts: the end is near! Placed in the final training block, these workouts allow you to lock in your target speed. Don't panic if it sometimes seems difficult to maintain: you'll be more rested on race day! However, it's not a marathon: it should feel more accessible over long intervals than your pace on the actual distance.
The strength & conditioning: did you think we forgot it? Never ! We said it: the 100k race is very traumatic for your body. You must work your muscles to prepare them to withstand such intense effort. You will not escape it.
